How to use
- Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP photo on the box, click to browse, or paste it with Ctrl+V. The first time, the browser downloads the AI model, which can take a minute on a slow connection.
- Wait a few seconds while the background is removed. The original and the cutout appear side by side.
- Click DOWNLOAD PNG to save the cutout with a transparent background (the file name ends in -no-bg.png), or COPY PNG to paste it straight into a document or design app.
Remove a background without uploading your photo
Most background removers send your picture to a server. Here the work is done by an AI segmentation model (ISNet, through the open-source IMG.LY background removal library) running inside your browser. The model files are downloaded once from IMG.LY's CDN and then cached; your photo itself never leaves your device, which matters for photos of yourself, your kids or your home.
The result is a PNG with a transparent background, the format design tools, slide decks and online stores expect. There is no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many photos you process.
What it works best on
The model finds the main subject and cuts it out. Results depend on the photo:
| Works well | Harder |
|---|---|
| One person, a pet or a product in clear focus | Several overlapping people or objects |
| Subject that stands out from the background | Subject the same color as the background |
| Even light, sharp edges | Motion blur, very dark photos |
| Short or tied-back hair | Fine flyaway hair and see-through fabric, which may lose detail |
Common uses
Profile photos and headshots for LinkedIn, a resume or a team page; product photos for Etsy, eBay or Facebook Marketplace listings; stickers and cutouts for school projects, invitations and greeting cards; and logos or signatures you want to place over another image.
Need a white or colored background instead of a transparent one? Place the PNG on a new background in any editor or slide app. For marketplace listings, a plain white background usually looks cleanest.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Only the AI model is downloaded the first time; the photo is processed in your browser and stays on your device.
Why is the first run slow?
The browser has to download the model, which is tens of megabytes. After that it is cached, and later photos take only a few seconds.
Why PNG and not JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so the background would turn white or black. PNG keeps the cut-out edges clean on any color you place it on.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, on recent phones. Very large photos can be slow or run out of memory on older devices; resize them first with the Image Resizer.
